All-Consuming Love

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
all your soul, and all your mind.
This is the first and greatest commandment."
(Matthew 22:37-38)

These words have been coming to my mind often during the last few weeks. Sometimes I like to focus on certain truths that can become so familiar to us that we lose their true meaning. I have been pondering just what it means to love God with everything I have ... all my heart, all my soul, and all my mind. I think that I have a long way to go to really live this out, but this is what I desire most of all.

What would it look like if I really did love God in this way?

Would it look like how I love others in my life? I love my husband more deeply than I love any other person. He is gone on a three-week missions trip to Quebec now with some of our Student Venture students. Even though I cannot visibly see him each day now, my heart is so tuned in to him. Every time I hear from him (email, texting, phone calls) I drop everything, and want to hear all about what is going on there in Quebec. He is so faithful to connect and communicate with me. If even a few hours go by where I don't hear from him, I find myself wondering how he is doing, and longing to hear from him again.

Am I the same way with my faithful, loving Lord? Do I drop everything else and listen intently to what He has to say to me? Do I long to hear from Him throughout the day? Is my heart so closely connected to His that my thoughts are with Him constantly?

The words above are repeated again in Mark 12:30 ~ "And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength."

I am going to keep thinking on these words. I want to learn more about this all-consuming love.

  1. This is a really great post. Thanks for sharing this. I want to be able to drop everything for God too. I prayed that I would do this after reading your post. You have great wisdom from God and communicate well how to have a loving relationship with Him. :)
